Ookayama International School is a small school that offers an alternative to the larger international schools in Tokyo. More traditional schools focus on the group, but at OIS we focus on the individual. Students learn in a relaxed atmosphere which fosters both personal growth and academic success.

Student Focused Education

Education is personalized to suit individual student needs. Class sizes of 1-5 allow for one-to-one tutoring if a student is struggling with a particular aspect of his or her study. Instructors tailor their methods to suit individual learning styles, rather than expecting all students to follow a rigid classroom structure. The teaching staff has extensive experience of teaching students from a variety of backgrounds with particular educational needs. This translates into quality instruction for every student and ensures the focus on the student is maintained. Students are encouraged to stay after school in supervised study halls, as teachers are available to give extra learning support at the end of the school day. Student progress is closely monitored, and faculty members are in contact with parents on a regular basis.

A Flexible Approach

The school offers distance learning programs for grades 6-12 (Ages 11-18) This allows for many unique opportunities not available in the more traditional school system. Students may enroll at any time during the year, and if need be, set an individual pace for their work. Exceptional students are encouraged to take more challenging courses to better prepare them for post-secondary education. Courses are also available for part-time students and those who have taken a break from education. Older students can take classes outside normal school hours if they have other commitments. Graduation from OIS is not based on age or grade, but rather on credits earned.

Accreditation

OIS provides a fully accredited high school education which has helped numerous students go on to higher education in Japan and overseas. Students are enrolled on distance learning programs at The North Dakota Center for Distance Education or at The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Independent Study High School. These programs are fully accredited through the North Central Association Commission and School Improvement (NCACASI).
